We purchased this beautiful 280SL last month from a gentleman in Michigan. We had purchased a couple other low-mile, collector-level cars from him last year, and after putting some very enjoyable miles on those cars we called him back to say hey, if you're ever interested in letting some more of your collection go, let us know. We were ecstatic to get a call about his 280SL, as we're big R107 fans and have had many of them. This car is an excellent example, and we've already put nearly 500 miles on it in just the one month that we've had it. As it sits right now, this is a clean, original, low-mile 280SL in fantastic mechanical order.
Exterior:
- Please see the video along with the listing, as the car is shown in detail. Blemishes are all shown close-up and in direct sunlight.
- Paint is very nice throughout. A paint gauge shows readings of 8.0-15.0 all around the car, consistent with one repaint. Repaint was clearly done to a high standard, as it appears as factory. No dust under the paint, orange peel, or overspray. Paint shows minimal signs of age. No clear coat damage or anything of the sort.
- Black soft top is original and in great shape. No tears, stains, or any real signs of wear. Hardtop is in nice shape too, though there is one very small ding on it.
- Polished 15 inch wheels are in great shape, with minimal pitting or oxidation. Tires are in good shape as well, not dry and have plenty of tread. DOT 2N8335.
- Chrome is fantastic throughout. No oxidation or real signs of age on the fender flares, trim, mirrors, or bumpers.
- Glass and light lenses are all clear and crack-free, including the fog lights. Square European headlights really help from an aesthetic perspective. A much better look than the US-spec quad headlights.
Interior:
- Seats are in excellent shape and show minimal signs of age. Interior has not been restored, seats have not been re-dyed, and condition is consistent with the car's 32k original miles. Even the driver's outer seat bolster is in great shape.
- Carpet is in good shape and the car will also come with it's original tan Mercedes-branded floormats.
- Dash is excellent. No cracks, no discoloring or warping. The finish on the “wood” faces is close-to-new, not faded or peeling like we often see. There is an extremely minor hairline crack in the “wood” down by the window switches, though barely noticeable.
- Gauges are all functional, including the odometer. 32k miles is accurate based on ownership history, observable condition, and tremendously fresh road-feel. When looking over the underbody, multiple components still showed the little dabs of factory paint on them. Very original, very clean.
- Clarion radio is functional. Fan/heat is functional, R12 air conditioning is not. R12 compressor is free, but does not kick on.
- This car has a backseat, fairly uncommon for R107s. A big plus for top-down motoring with kids. Backseat is in great condition.
Under the Hood / Underbody:
- Please take a look through the underbody photos, as the car is documented in detail. Very nice throughout. Absolutely no through rust. Extremely dry, no evidence of any significant leaks.
- Starts right up first turn, idles cool and steady, pulls nicely through the gears, shifts super smoothly, doesn't hesitate under acceleration, tracks and brakes straight, and soaks up bumps very nicely without any noises or tendencies of concern. Exhaust note is fantastic; we actually prefer driving these 6-cylinder variants over the 8-cylinders. They may not have as much power, but they're more rev-happy and have a bit more character.
- This car is a reliable driver as it sits. The first weekend we had the car it completed a 300 mile round trip on the highway and felt fantastic in every way.
- Original drivetrain. We do not have much for paper documentation with the car, a bit unfortunate considering it's such a nice, low-mile example.
