✅We purchased this truly excellent 240z out of Wisconsin, where it had remained
with the previous owner since ~2010. He had actually inherited the car from his
father, who had lived with the car for many years in the San Diego area. While we
don't know the exact year his father bought the car, we did find his 1988 Santee,
California registration still in the glovebox. In his later years, the 240z didn't get
driven much. So, when his son related the car to Wisconsin, he decided he'd embark
on a restoration. He pulled the motor out and tore it down himself at home, while
simultaneously amassing a collection of parts for the car. Well, as it does, time got
away from him, and the restoration stalled there.
We purchased the car just as he left it, engine-out and loaded with boxes of parts.
While we weren't particularly keen on jumping into a restoration, an extraordinarily
dry, rust-free roller with a good, known California history is a rare opportunity. Not
only that, but the odometer reads just 29,005 miles, and may well be the actual
original chassis mileage.
In weighing how to proceed with the car, we settled on the following path: instead
of re-installing the 2.4L L24 motor in unknown condition and hoping for the best,
we'd purchase a new long block 2.8L L28 from California Datsun. This is, of course,
the 280z motor, and it truly does make the car a significantly better driver. Please
check out California Datsun's engine rebuild page, which is under the Restoration
tab on their website, for details as to their engine rebuild process, as they truly do
make these engines new again. Note: the removed L24 is no longer with the car and
is not included in the sale.
We sent the car and L28 engine to Datsun Doctor in Detroit for assembly and
sorting. They did an excellent job, to the tune of nearly $10k, and the car is a dream
to drive as a result. Please see the Service Records portion below for a breakdown
of all work performed.
As it sits now, this is a top-notch runner and driver. Light, responsive, quick, sounds
great, stops great, looks great….it's the whole package.
✅Exterior:
🔹 Please have a look through the photos and video provided in the listing, as
the car is shown in detail.
🔹 We put an elcometer on the car and cannot find any signs of body filler at all
anywhere. Dry, dry, dry.
🔹Car appears to have been repainted once in the correct original Orange, and
the job was done to a very high standard. Body is nice and straight, with no
significant scuffs, dents, or dings.
🔹 Panel fitment is great, doors open and close nicely.
🔹Glass is all clear, crack-free, and presumed original. Lights and signals are all
functional.
🔹 Wheels are free of any curb rash or other markings, appear like new. Tires
show negligible wear, though they have likely aged out.
✅Interior:
🔹Interior presents very well throughout. Not much to note other than some
super small markings on the lower driver door panel from being “kicked”
open, as well as some rubber trim inside the driver door jamb that may
benefit from replacement.
🔹Seats are in nice shape, with no bolster damage nor punctures.
🔹 Odometer is functional and reads just over 29k miles. Condition and history
of the car would indicate that this more than likely is correct original chassis
mileage, though unfortunately the paper trail to confirm it does not exist.
🔹Fan and radio are functional. Temperature, oil pressure, amperage, and fuel
gauges are all functional. The analog clock is not.
✅Underneath:
🔹 Please review the underbody photos. I'll say it again – dry! No bubbling or
other rust to be found. In the photos you will note some old undercoating
flaking off.
🔹 The overwhelming majority of suspension components are almost new, as
the previous owner in Wisconsin went through the car's suspension during
his never-finished restoration.
🔹New exhaust from the headers back, which sounds fantastic.
✅Service Records:
🔹 June 2010. Z Therapy. $805. 240z 3sc remanufactured carb pair.
🔹 April 2024. California Datsun. $4,225. Long block Engine L28/E88 with
ceramic coated black L6 valve cover.
🔹 January 2025. Motorsport Auto. $554. New MSA turbo exhaust system, new
3-2 headers.
🔹 March 2025. Datsun Doctor. $9,648. Install remanufactured engine. Re-
time new engine, rebuild and balance both carbs. Paint engine. Complete
brake service front and rear – new drums, shoes, wheel cylinders, rotors.
Install master brake and clutch cylinders, clutch slave, and wiring, fuel cell,
fuel sending unit. New battery, cables, and hold-down. Replace thermostat,
spark plugs, oil pressure sender, fuel pump, coolant reservoir, starter, fuel
filter, heater hoses, drain plug.
